With deer season upon us I thought it would be fun if we offered "helpful Tips" about common scene hunting, they might be funny or serous but please keep it legal. I will start it off = I encourage my younger neighbors to put out food plots, mineral blocks and feeders to encourage Big Bucks to get even Bigger ..... then on opening day I harvest the Big Buck they've been growing all summer long.

Good idea Skipper As far as Morgan county goes, and I'm sure other counties do the same. This is good for non-hunters. Call the Sheriffs office and they will put your name on a list. Then if someone hits a deer in thier car, and if it's not all mangled up, they will go from the top of the list down. and call people who are on the list. The person who claims the deer must able there to pick it up, and the Sheriffs department will sell you a deer stamp right there on the spot.

Here's a good one = I know most hunters target Bucks and of course Buck activity such as rubs & scrapes, hunting over these areas will often times produce good results.
However I prefer to target Doe, and will avoid buck rubs & scrapes and concentrate on primary and secondary doe traffic areas.
I always remember that when the Rut is in, the Bucks follow the Doe and not the other way around.
If I see a good sized Buck walking down a Doe path, I generally will take it but I'm not going to be upset because I don't get a Buck.
Doe out number Bucks by 10 to 1 and are better eating .... something to think about.

SCENT BLOCKERS = I personally think this is a bunch of Hooey, Before they came out with this Gimmick hunters were taking big bucks and I've seen hunters drinking Coffee, Beer, Whiskey and smoking cigarettes and take big bucks.
CAMOUFLAGE = listen very carefully .... Deer are colorblind!! ... I wear Blaze Orange and I have had deer walk within three yards of me while I was sitting on a white 5-gallon bucket.
TREE STANDS = Are fantastic!! great for seeing long distances and looking over high brush.
GROUND HUNTING = I have taken as many deer from the ground as I have from a tree stand.
GETTING OUT BEFORE SUNRISE = this is up to you, most reports of people falling out of trees is because they fall asleep waiting for the sun to rise, I prefer getting out just at daybreak.

COMMON SENSE + Obey the law = Wear exposed at all times Blazed Orange ... hat, gloves or coat or vest . This is for your protection against getting shot by another hunter, animals will not shoot blindly into a brush pile because of movement and animals do not wear blaze orange.
I know there are some hunters that wear their orange hats to their stands, then remove them .... I think they are afraid of the deer seeing the orange and running away .... so let us recap ... DEER ARE COLORBLIND!! .... they see movement NOT color.
PERMISSION = Always get permission "Before" starting your hunt, not only for the land you are hunting on but the land next door (why?) .. Lets say you shoot a deer on the ground that you do have permission to hunt but the deer jumps the neighbors fence and dies on the neighbors land. It is against the law to retrieve that deer without getting permission first.
If you are up front and make it perfectly clear that you are not hunting on the neighbors land, most property owners will give you permission ahead of time to retrieve your deer.
KNOW YOUR SURROUNDINGS = After you get permission and you find out where you're stand is going to be, take a walk around the area and see where the roads are, houses, barns, if there is livestock present. The quickest way to loose quality hunting ground is to shoot someones livestock ... the second quickest to loose your hunting ground is to shoot someones barn or house.
If the land owner has allowed "other people" to hunt his land ... give the them the respect you would want for yourself and do not interfere with their hunt.

DISTRACTIONS = How many times have you been "Spotted" by the deer ... your in the tree and the deer is looking right at you .... can't move or the deer will bolt ... What do you do??
I generally carry two calls on me, one is a crow call and the other is a squirrel call ... deer are not afraid of ether and will generally believe what they here as apposed to what they see.
Several years ago I walked out of a woods into a pasture to a surprised grazing doe ... thinking fast, I remembered that the neighbor had cattle .... I started mooing like a cow ... the doe relaxed and started grazing again .... I bagged the doe.
Opportunity ++ Many hunters want to walk the shortest distance from their truck to their stand and they want to keep the trail they take as wild looking as possible.
After many years of hunting I have found that deer are a creature of opportunity .... I make a winding path to my stand and I try to make the path rather wide and clear of brush, easy for me to walk and the deer will follow (why?) ..
Think about it .... would you rather walk down a smooth, clean, unobstructed path or would you rather fight your way through thorn bushes? ... Deer are no different, they will always take the path of least resistance.

FLASHLIGHTS = For those of you that love anything that illuminates the night like I do, I highly recommend this site below. www.goodnightflashlights.com/Over the years I have switched from the old flashlights to the newer single LED flashlights and I get them from the site above. These lights are supper bright and they cast a tight, long range beam and on some models, the head can be removed to cast a super bright flood light.

NOCTURNAL = now there's a big word and the people who think deer see color also think deer sleep all night long however this is not true. Deer see very well at night and become very active after the sun goes down.
Deer will travel great distances, mate and even make rubs & scrapes at night as well as in daylight. If you are going to hunt over a scrape, you will need to know if it is a daytime scrape or a nighttime scrape.
Trail cams are very good at recording the time the buck makes his appearance and he will re-visit that scrape every 24 hours, whether it be day or night. I do not use trail cams because I do not target bucks however, every year I harvest a good sized buck that just happens to be following the doe that I do target.

COMMUNICATION + I hunt in a "cell phone dead zone" SO we have to use Walkies-Talkies and they work just fine but what gets me is why other people "Think" they have got to "Whisper" into their cell phones or walkie- talkie.
I suppose they get it from watching too much TV, have you ever watched the "Hunting Channel" where the deer hunter and the camera man are in the same tree and "After" the deer is shot and dead on the ground, the hunter "Still" whispers into the camera mike.
I talk in a regular voice and I always ask the person holding the other walkie-talkie to talk normal too .... that way we understand each other the first time.
TOO MUCH CREDIT ++++ We definitely give deer way too much credit when it comes to the harvest and they definitely don't deserve any of it.
They smell us ..... so! we smell them too. They see the ultra violet light in our cloths ..... I don't think so They understand our language ..... false, they only know Russian They can see the colors in our clothing ...... No They read our mail & tap our phones ....... I can believe this
Its as though we need some product advertised on TV, that is carefully explained to us by these so called experts, telling you "YOU NEED THIS" to become a successful hunter and isn't that what we all want to be?
I believe we all can become successful hunters but I would recommend turning the TV off, using common scene, obeying the law, respecting land owners rights and being considerate of others.
Spend time in the woods you hunt, Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall. ..... Watch the trails, pay attention where they bed down, where they drink, eat and play (yes, deer play) ...we will talk about that next time

VANTAGE POINT (+ -) Earlier I mentioned something about tree stands and I have some and they are super for seeing great distances. over brush & other obstacles.
Having the vantage point these things offer can be a blessing or a hindrance, Not only can you see the deer at a greater distance >>> they can also see you at a greater distance.
While I'm not suggesting they even know what you are, I am suggesting that they see and re-act to movement and that is what spooks a deer quicker than anything.
I was up in my newest stand last evening just looking around and in my haste to clear a decent shooting range (50 yards) I believe, I have exposed myself to the same deer I'm wanting to hide from.

PHANTOM DEER & YOUR EYES Every year while sitting quietly in my stand, waiting patiently for a deer to come along my eyes will play tricks on me. I will see "something" that looks like a deer in the early morning or late afternoon light and I could have sworn it moved.
Often times these are "Phantom Deer", a clump of weeds or a bush or even a tree limb that is sticking up off the ground .... Gee I wonder why I've never noticed it before?
Well it's because you put your stand up in full sunlight and these Phantoms hide during the day but they will come back to tease you in the evening and early morning hours.
I would suggest buying a lightweight pare of "GOOD" binoculars ... Yes "Good" ....so don't be afraid of the price tag, they will serve you well and those Phantoms will disappear. ================================================
"GIFTS" OF THE HUNT Hunting deer is not really hunting, .... You sit in a stand and wait for the deer to come to you .... Now, what do you do while you're waiting for that deer to walk by??
I watch everything!! Birds, Squirrel, Beaver swimming up the creek, Musk Rats, leaves falling, Fox, Deer, Rabbits and sometimes if its warm enough I watch the insects .... Oops did I say deer!
Every outing is a Blessing and I will see things that most people only see on nature shows on TV. I smell the Earth, leaves, mud, trees ... I feel the bark of the tree I'm in, I see the silly antics of the little chickadees and nut thatches as the defy gravity by walking up-side-down on a tree branch in their quest for food.
I notice the tree branches stretching outward and upward and the strange shapes they make, I see the little piny squirrel chasing the bigger Fox Squirrel away from his cash of Wall nuts so the piny can steal one.
There are so many wonderful things to do while you are waiting for a deer.

BOY SCOUTS MOTTO = BE PREPARED
I generally tend to over dress for warmth because I can always take clothing off but if I don't have it with me I can't put it on.
I usually carry a shoulder bag with things I think may be important. Frog Togs rain suit. Parachute cord or rope. Water in plastic bottles (2) Cell phone or Walkie Talkie. Flashlight. (2) Tissue Chewing gum. Matches. Gloves (2 pair) Squirrel Call & Crow Call. Small first-aid kit. Pocket knife.
Weather you are hunting close to home or far from home, you should always be prepared. Think about what you think you'll need and go from there, everyone will be different .... some people don't need anything.

BREEZE vs WIND Many times while out hunting we encounter a slight breeze and this can be a relief to the heat or it can be a chill to the bone depending on the weather. I have found that deer will be more coshes in a slight breeze, smelling the air, watching movement around every tree. Wind on the other hand can often times be a hazard to you sitting up 15 feet or more in a tree, especially if its raining or snowing or just right down freezing. When its windy, I generally have a 5-gallon bucket nussled away in a brush thicket or a fallen tree's branches where I'm much closer to the ground out of the wind and somewhat protected from the aliments. Again, over the years of watching deer during high winds, they will move rather quickly through the woods not really paying that much attention to anything because with "Everything" being blown all about them they cannot use their scenes to locate danger. Sitting up in a tree during high winds is a bit to scary for me but if it doesn't bother you than you're much braver than I am.

Every evening after work I've been out walking through the woods and Saturday morning I sat 2 hours in each stand and saw a >>
possibly first year 4 pointer, small bodied, puny rack ....
6 pointer, great body but again a puny rack ...
A big pony of a 8 pointer, massive rack .... and ....
while I was watching the 8 point, there was something of really Gigantic size, back in the corner trying to tear down that big tree as he was rubbing against it >>>
about 20 to 25 doe, great bodies, a few babies.
For the last couple of days things have really been happening, we found plenty of rubs but no scrapes.
Now, Scrape are appearing in some fantastic places and they have great size to them, with "Fresh" buck urine ..... PU>> IT STINKS !!
Along with the fresh buck sign, the doe activity has greatly increased along the paths that we cut. >> I'm thinking I have to do some pruning for that center field stand. .... May need some help.
You guys really need to see these things for yourselves.
