Here we are, In Between, That time of year after Hunting Season, Ice fishing is almost over due to the spring time weather we've been having. The weather is somewhat unsettled and quite frankly there's not a heck of a lot we can do, except plan for SPRING and the SPAWN.
I for one really enjoy that time of year when the trees are budding and of course there are the MUSHROOMS that follow and as the water starts getting warmer, the crappie & White Bass will start their spawning runs.
This usually starts in mid April here in North Central Indiana, The Wabash River is chucked full of crappie & White Bass and they will be making their way upstream to dams and outlets of reservoirs, where the oxygen levels are high. Usually, however between the end of February mid March is when the Walleye & Yellow Perch start their Spawns.
Bluegill on the other hand will actually spawn three times a year AND if you are or are not aware of it ... Fish are a victim of their environment, They spawn according to the water temperature ... When the water they are in reaches a certain temperature "BINGO" it's time for that species to spawn ... Sound silly however if you pay attention to the species you are wanting to harvest and watch the water temp, you will be very successful.
Species .................................... Water Temp
Large Mouth Bass ........................ 68 - 72
Small Mouth Bass ........................ 59 - 60
White Bass ................................. 57 - 68
Bluegill ....................................... 70 - 75
Redear ....................................... 68 - 75
Black crappie ............................... 62 - 68
White crappie .............................. 60 - 65
Channel Catfish ............................ 75 - 80
Walleye ....................................... 43 - 46
I'd say it's beginning to look like Walleye will be becoming active rather soon, Good Luck and let us know how you do this year.
