FOR about three weeks now, my Brother & hunting Partner have been cutting trails through the woods. The trails are roughly 3 to 4 feet wide and will fallow PRIMARY DEER TRAILS ... Somewhat ..
WE are clearing the high weeds, saplings and fallen trees that block out paths to and from our tree stands. Then we walk around the Swamp and woodland area locating Primary Day & Night Trails .... Do you know the difference ??
WHEN we have a general idea of where the deer are traveling we set out creating our own FOLLOW trail .. This trail will intersect with as many Primary trails as possible .. IT is very Thick out there and with all the rain we had in the Spring, The weeds have gone CRAZY .. Add to that the storm damage (fallen trees) and we really have our hands full.
THIS fallow trail will give the deer a choice .. Fight the heavy brush or Follow our new trail ... Getting the trail made now will allow the deer time to find it and use it .. WE try to incorporate as much of a Primary Day trail as possible .. Bringing the new trail as close to our tree stands as possible .. Say 25 to 50 yards .. just enough for a safe shot but not to close to alarm them.
WE know there are so many people who never set foot in their hunting areas until one week before season and then they try to clean things up quickly .. depending on where they hunt, this might work out just fine for them.
KNOWING that after the Kill we are going to have to drag our deer out, these trails will help us out more than you know. .. Soon we will be setting one person in a tree stand and he will tell the other person who will be walking the trail, weather or not he has a clear shot .. any obstacles in the line of fire (saplings, tall weeds) will have to be removed.
THERE is approximately 100 acres that we hunt on and of course our trails will NOT cover the entire area .. HOWEVER .. When the deer do enter this area they will (hopefully) fallow our trails .... right to our FREEZERS.
IT is very important to get our shooting ranges open, being able to see your game in advance is important as well ... REMEMBER, if you can see them .. they can also see you.
WHILE cutting the new trail we have found some really great places for our ground blinds, We all know that there will be days that are way to windy to be in a tree and that's why we use ground blinds .. We will utilize the new trail & the primary day trails that merge .. We also look for areas where they bed down .. And as soon as the Bucks start making their Rubs & Scrapes .. We will take that into consideration.
WE have allot of work to do and fortunately we have plenty of time to do it in .. What ever you do, Be careful out there .. Always take a friend, just in case you need help.
