As outdoors men & women, we all know, the mmore time we spend in the great outdoors the more we are going to see. Much of what we see is often refered to as "comon" or "Expected" and when we tell others about our sightings, people will say "Oh, I've seen one of those too" or perhaps "I see those everyday, its no big deal". Sometimes I get the feeling that the sights and sounds and even smells that we encounter when we venture into the wilderness are not entinded for anyone else but us.
I have tried for many many years to get friends & neighbors to venture out into a woods, a swamp or evenn a grassy field durring the day and even durring the night just to "see what there is to see", to "Hear what there is to hear" and to "smell what there is to smell". Of course I have more luck getting people to accept my "Daytime offers". Theres something about the dark that scares people. Personally I think people watch "TOO MANY SCARRY MOVIES" that take place at night, I have seen first hand when the power goes out durring a storm and my neighbors come over to take shelter in my basement. I have seen the fear in these teenagers faces, heard the stories of these television creatures that are waiting in the darkness.
What are we doing to our childrn?
When our children were young I would drive the truck down to an ole county bridge (late at night) over the Wabash River, park in the middle of the bridge (no streetlights), throw a blanket in the bed of the truck and with one child on each side of me we would look up into the nights sky, looking at the stars and watching the "Shooting Stars". We did not watch scarry movies, we like going out at dusk and pre-daylight hours.
I must admit that for most of my life, there are times when I'm out in the great outdoors that I see things ... Things that even I cannot explain what they are. Some people call them UFO's, I do not know what they are but I have seen many and I have watched these things do some really amazing flying..... I thought I've heard and could identify every sound in our local woods, however, I have heard some really strange sounds (at night).. And I didn't know what made it... And I don't even want to talk about the smells.
Turn off the television... turn off the cell phone ... go to a State Park or a County Park ... Take a hike .. Take your children ... see what the graet outdoors has to offer .... Put a blanket on the ground or in a pick-up bed at night and watch the lights in the nights sky.
