Yesterday 11-12-11 was the beginning of slug season, since I don't bow hunt anymore. Yesterday was a very exciting day, I saw 15 doe & took one, field dressed at 95-lbs .... saw 5 buck ... 3 were 1st year small racks ... one was a 4-pointer with a big body the other was a massive 8-pointer ... I passed on the 1st year's but couldn't get a clear shot at the brute of an 8 .... could have shot the 4 twice but I took the doe instead.
I know most people will tell you that deer will only move up-wind but yesterday they were moving every direction, up-wind, down-wind and even cross-wind and this could be that there were many hunters out moving in the woods ... spooking the deer .... or .... it could just mean that deer go where ever they want to no matter what direction the wind is blowing.
I went out this morning and stayed out til 2pm, the wind was blowing so very hard from the South that even the birds had a difficult time. I was watching some little birds, not sure what they were but they had the most beautiful sounds when they sang. .... other than that I SAW NOTHING!!
Of course its a big let down from yesterday but there's always tomorrow.

Sounds to me like you had a couple of great days ! Always good to take something early, takes the edge off to were you can enjoy the rest of the season instead of wanted that first deer. Always felt cheated when I limited out on the first day even when I use to trap at the same time, deer season over in one day. I always use to bow hunted so I was not so much over eager opening day of gun season, had been at it awhile.Always loved watch the wild life as part of the hunt, and miss that part some, but not the cold, 5:30AM getting up crap. More and more I did a lot more afternoon hunting then early AM stuff. Good luck on the big boy, but be safe!!

Eric came out this morning and wanted to hunt stand #3 down by the creek, I took stand #2 in the back corner and at 8:am I saw a really big doe but she was walking away from me.
I grunted at her, she stopped and turned around and started walking towards me ... I asked God to please have her turn broadside to me ... she did ... She field dressed at 105-pounds ... Thank you Lord.
Eric helped me drag her out and he's going to take a break and come back out this afternoon, I'm going to take a break too and try it again when Eric comes out.

Eric came out this afternoon about 1:30pm and at 2pm we were just about blown out of our trees .... then at 2:03 the wind completely STOPPED!! ... It became so very quiet ... became very dark, temperature dropped 15 degrees then at 2:07 the warning Syrians started blowing.
It grew darker, colder, only sounds were logansport's & Burnettsville's Syrians.
Then it started getting lighter, windier then came the Typhoon
I did happen to see several turkey .... silly, stupid bird, how they keep from going extinct ... I'll never know.
Suppose to be a real nice day tomorrow so I'll try it again

Hunted in Carol County this morning in a heavy fog, as it lifted I saw a cat, two squirrels and a host of little birds but no deer.
Came home and hunted here in the beautiful sunshine, watching a gray & fox squirrel battle to the near death over witch tree branch one of them was allowed to sit on.
But no deer ..... there's always tomorrow ..

Tomorrow is today I should have stayed in bed, saw two BIG FAT RED FOX SQUIRRELS playing tag on a gigantic cottonwood tree & I also saw two Pelated Woodpeckers that were just an awesome site. Got a bit cooler as the morning progressed and of course I wasn't dressed for the drop in temp, I'll take a break, dress warmer and try it again.

You got that right, Charlie.
This would be great sleeping, camping weather, camping in a cabin, lodge or mobile home.
Its COLD outside and Mr Frost is everywhere and the weatherman says its suppose to be windy again today, So I think I'll grab a 5-gallon bucket and ground hunt the pine-trees.
I was really hoping to have gotten my limit by now but there is some time and I can't forget about muzzle-loader season.
Witch reminds me ... I received a C.V.A. .50cal Optima Pro last year for Christmas and I should have lined it up this past summer but didn't .... oh well I still have my trusty C.V.A. .54 that will do just fine

Sunday November 27th, the last day for "SLUG" season and I literally got Washed out or should I say Rained Out.
I headed out to the swamp at 7:30 this morning to get hunkered down for what I thought was going to be a very productive hunt, instead of having everyone in Cass County out on this the last day of slug season attempting to fill their tags they bought .... I felt I was the only fool out there.
It had rained most of the night and was still raining as I headed out, It was so easy walking with everything being soaked real good. I sat quietly in my stand listening to the raindrops hitting my poncho, the rain slowed then advanced but I was snug as a bug in a dry rug.
As daylight slowly crept up through the clouds I noticed the little birds, undaunted by the increasing abundance of moisture being deposited upon them. Then came the Squirrels, Piny's at first then came the Gray's then the big Fox squirrels came out last. I must have watched their antics for about two hours but NO DEER.
I moved from the swamp to the sand hill thinking that if the deer were moving that they might want a higher elevation with some dryer well drained ground. No such luck, it rained for the whole 4 hours I was out and still NO DEER.
I came home, shed my my hunting garb and am now hunkered down in front of this computer still snug as a bug in a dry rug. I believe I'm done for this part of the season ... However ... Muzzle loader season will start December 3rd through December 18th and of course I will be out there once again
To Be Continued .....

.......... Continued .... Saturday
12-10-11 This is the second weekend of muzzle-loader season, I worked last Saturday (opening day) and Sunday it RAINED. Right now its a full moon, clear skies & 12 degrees --- Brrrrrr , I'm getting chills just thinking about it.
My nephew Eric came out yesterday and hunted stand #2, about 4pm my wife went over to feed the horses and after she left Eric heard some buck grunting between him & the horse pen but he couldn't see anything from the tree stand because of the massive thicket there.
The horses could see the buck and Eric could see the horses take off running away from that end of the pasture, they stopped and almost stood at attention facing the area where the buck was.
SO, I'm going to hunt stand #1 witch overlooks the North section of that thicket, the area where the buck would have come out and could have been seen by the horses.
But for now, I'm going to get some coffee and maybe some breakfast. ... Get dressed slowly, making sure I'm dressed warm enough to venture out into that 12 degree temperature.

Dang, Saturday was as bad as today .... COLD!! NO DEER.
One weekend left ... We'll have to see what happens then.
I should go squirrel hunting, those critters are getting fat.
Might try getting some rabbits after muzzle-loader season.

Get the biggest buck you ever seen on the last day, to make it well worth the wait. Good luck.
