No such thing as a dumb question. There is only the lack of knowledge with brings about any question. The simplest answer is yes they are good to eat. Filet em and eatem like gills.

Actually Rock Bass or Goggle-eye are very good eating, I would rank them up there with Redear & Bluegill, Its becoming harder to find a good Goggle-eye fishery but when I was a teenager we did lots of fishing on the Eel River at Logansport and the river was chucked full of really nice ones. Not so anymore, they are great fighters and will hit beetle spins or slow moving tubes.

White River and Killbuck Creek in Anderson used to be good for them in the spring, but that was before the big fish kill. I haven't tried the river here recently though.

Rock bass are very good!!!!Taste like chicken HAHAHA!!!Not really, but they do taste alot like gills.Big Blue River holds some pretty nice ones I fish for them when the water is warm enough to wade the river. And as the Skipper says Beetle Spins are one of my favorite baits. Good Luck and tight lines.Wayne

Big Blue River .... I have never fished it ... We pass over it when we travel South to Jennings County to visit the in-laws and I have always thought it would be a good kayaking stream.
Is it a clean river? Can you eat the fish without suffering ill effects?? Are there public accesses available?? What sections would you recommend to a rookie??
There are other streams I've always wanted to float as well, Like the Flatrock River, Clifty Creek and the Muscatatuck River.

I know this is an older post, but thought I would jump in and wonder if any of you will catch it, like maybe fishnut? Have caught rockbass all my live at many different places. In creeks & rivers I would always catch them. They hit a safteypin type spinner bait ( bettle spins) but will hit about any small lure. Have caught them in gravle pits, BIG lakes, small lakes and everywere in between. They are a meaty fish, and look like they would be great for the table . B U T with that said I have not been able to try them, because I have NEVER cleaned any and not found them full of yellow and or black grubs peppered throught the meat. I have found smallmouth bass with this same thing and just don't have disire to eat these things. I know the DNR says you can cook these and they won't hurt you to eat them, BUT into things get a klot worse for me I just have to past on fish with grubs. wondering have any of you found any rockbass without grubs? Note I didn't say with , because I have never tried cleaning one the didn't have them. I styopped cleaning them many years ago, till two years ago and I got into a real nice mess of 11-12" rockbass on the lake here and tried once more and cleaned a couple of the 15 , I had in the live well. NOPE GRUBS in both so the other 13 swam aways and the turtles got feed rockbass . I also find most with little (?leechs) attached to the inside of thier mouth??

I've not caught any good rock bass in a long time, last time I caught any big ones wa up at st. claire a few years ago and they didn't have any grubs or leeches in them. Talking about the leeches in the mouth, I believe it was skipper and I that was fishing last year, I can't remember where we were at but we caught alot of fish that had leeches in there mouths. Gill

These grubs are Parasites and no they won't hurt you, I've caught hundreds of fish that have has "Black Dots" all the way up to actual worms in their flesh. Here is a link that tells about them = www.fish.state.pa.us/images/pages/qa/fish/worms.htmInteresting reading but always use your own judgment as to what you will keep & eat.
